City power grid to go underground
HCM City has targeted to bury
50% of the citys power lines by 2010.
Underground power lines would be
safer, stabler and easier to maintain, less vulnerable to lightning strikes or
collapse, and the removal of a tangled overhead electrical grid would improve
the appearance of the city, the citys Vice Chairman Nguyen Trung Tin said.
The city's targets for
electricity grid improvement through 2020 have already been approved by the
Prime Minister. During the 2001-2005 period, HCM City installed 398km of power
lines, but the process of burying existing lines will be slow.
To get 50% of power lines in the
city center underground, another 230 km of cable will have to be buried over
This year, about 74 km of power
lines will be installed at a cost of VND228 billion (US$14.25 million) on main
streets in districts 1, 2, Binh Thanh and Phu Nhuan, the locations of a number
of important agencies, organizations and entertainment centers.
In 2008, 83 km of underground
power lines will be laid in other districts at an estimated cost of VND280
billion. The next two years, another 80 km will be installed in District 2 at a
cost of VND314 billion.
The city plans to issue bonds
or obtain assistance in funding the project.
