HCM City organized a grand
meeting to celebrate the 30th anniversary of liberation of southern
Vietnam and national reunification this morning.
Attending the event were some 50,000, troops, dignitaries, local and
foreign guests, representatives from various mass organizations, and top
Vietnamese leaders, including General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, State
President Tran Duc Luong, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai. Representatives
from Cuba, Laos and Cambodia were also present.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Nguyen Minh Triet, secretary of the
HCM City Party Committee, highlighted the significance of the
celebration, difficulties HCM City had to face after the war and its
achievements over the past 30 years. Triet said the city would try to
accelerate industrialization and modernization and to develop into an
economic center of the country.
On the occasion, President Tran Duc Luong awarded the Labor Hero medal
to HCM City. Luong praised the city for its dynamism and creativity, its
pivotal position in the south and its pioneering role in economic
reform. He urged the city to continue further the reform process and to
be at the forefront in national industrialization and modernization.

The event was also highlighted by a military parade, demonstrations of
the mass organizations and art performances.
