Nguyen Hue Boulevard

Nguyen Hue Boulevard

Nguyen Hue Boulevard

According to historiacal documents, the road, which is said to be the oldest and widest in Sai Gon, was built when the French arrived and started to construct the city. At that time, the road had the name of Charner or Kinh Lap (the Filled Canal) street because it was made by filling a canal. It was renamed Nguyen Hue Boulevard by the Saigon Administration on March 22nd, 1955 and has remained so up to now.

Being a beautiful boulevard and bearing the name of a national hero, Nguyen Hue Boulevard, which is located in Ben Nghe Ward, Dist 1, stretches from Ton Duc Thang St. to LeThanh Ton St. in front of the Municipal Peoples Committee, and crosses Hai Trieu, Ngo Duc Ke, Huynh Thuc Khang, Ton That Thiep, Mac Thi Buoi, Nguyen Thiep, Le Loi streets. It is a three-lane-road of which the middle one is for cars (ends at Le Loi St. at a square with the statue of President Ho Chi Minh). The two side lanes are for pedestrians; the right side starts from Ton Duc Thang inwards and the left side starts in the reverse direction.

Nguyen Hue (Quy Dau 1753 Nham Ty 1792), the National Hero, an Emperor, also known as Quang Binh, Van Hue and normally called  ong Binh (Mr Binh) or Duc Ong Tam (The eighth Lord) (for he was the eighth son in a family of seven brothers) by Binh Dinh people. His parents surname was Ho and that was converted into Nguyen, originally from the Hung Nguyen people (Nghe An province), the family were forced into Tay Son Thuong in Quy Ninh District, Binh Dinh Province (today known as Tay Son District, Binh Dinh Province).

After having occuppied Thang Long, he made a slogan Restore the Le and destroy the Trinh (Pho Le, diet Trinh) and was greeted by King Le Hien Tong at Van Tho Temple, appointed to be Nguyen suy Uy Quoc Cong and married Princess Ngoc Han. After  finishing all tasks, he withdrew his troops to the South.

In 1778, Nguyen Nhac came to the throne, and Nguyen Hue was appointed as Phu Chanh Bac Binh Vuong ( the regent to pacify the North).  He then garrisoned troops in Thuan Hoa. In the year of 1788 when Le Chieu Thong let the Thanh troops (from China) invade our country, he declared himself Emperor Quang Trung (therefore he was also called King Quang Trung). He then took his troops to the north to expel the Chinese.

As lthe Thanh troops occupied Thang Long, he made a decision to attack the enemy on the occasion of the New Year Festival. Ton Si Nghi, the enemys leader, was too terrified to take on amour and run for his life back to China while the Thanh soldiers tried to escape by crossing the bridge but died when the bridge collapsed, their corpses falling in the river.

Nguyen Hue is truly such an outstanding hero and a preeminent Emperor of Vietnam  that even the historians against The Nguyen Dynasty also recognize him as Nguyen Van Hue, Nhacs younger brother, who has a voice of like the bells ring, eyes as bright as electricity, cunning and warlike, and who is respected by everyone. A palace maid serving in the Le Palace uttered Nguyen Van Hue is a hero who is well-experienced, violent and talented for commanding troops. The way he led his army to the North could was like a magicianand no one could seek him out. He easily arrested Huu Chinh like arresting a child, killed Vu Van Nham like killing a pig. No one dared to look him straight in his face. Every time they heard his order, they were all panic-stricken, even more frightened than hearing thunder and lightening.
