CLEAN WATER PROGRAM

CLEAN WATER PROGRAM

Objectives to the year 2005:
The HCM City Peoples Committee signed Decision No. 93/2001/QD-UB on 15/10/2001 providing an action plan for the program to supply clean water for urban and suburban population in the 2001-2005 period with objectives as follows:
- To increase daily water supply capacity to 1,857,000 m3 by 2005 to make sure 90% of city population (4.1 million people) have access to water, with an average daily consumption rate of 160 liters/person.
- To build a transmission and distribution network that can handle the additional amount of water; expand the network to all areas still running short of clean water, areas under urbanization and industrial parks; upgrade the current network to eradicate areas where water supply remains unstable in urban districts; reduce the current water leakage rate to 29% by 2005.
- To increase the ratio of suburban households with access to clean water to 90% by 2005 with an average daily consumption rate of 60 liters/person in order to prevent diseases resulting from using contaminated water.
- To accomplish water supply projects approved in the 2001-2005 period; take advantage of available sources of capital (ODA, budget allocations and others) to upgrade and develop water-related projects.
- To promote public participation in this program to guarantee a positive change in handling, protecting, maintaining and developing the citys water supply network to minimize water leakage.
