Thu Thiem Tunnel Project

On June 22, 1997, the chairman of HCM City Peoples Committee submitted to Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet the final report on the feasibility study of roading at the Saigon River. The study was approved with the selected project being that to build a tunnel under the Saigon River to link District 1 and Thu Thiem Peninsula in District 2. Australian consulting company G.Maunsell & Partners Ltd., in collaboration with the MVA Consultancy, CES Enter, Sumitomo Bank and AIC Maunsell, carried out the feasibility study under assignment by Britains Overseas Development Agency.

The tunnel will begin from Nam Ky Khoi Nghia-Ham Nghi crossroads in District 1, go through Ben Chuong Duong Street and Saigon River before reaching Thu Thiem Peninsula. The study into the tunnel route also focused on Ham Nghi and Ben Chuong Duong streets. The maximum slope of the tunnel is 4% to ensure safety for motorcycles and other types of vehicles moving between District 1 and District 2.

According to consulting firm Maunsell, the construction of a bridge across the Saigon River is estimated to require US$116.2 million, while the underground tunnel project will need US$122 million and four years for completion.

The project to build an underground tunnel from Ham Nghi Street to District 2 will help ease the city government in clearing sites for the development of two urban centers along both sides of the Saigon River. This is HCM Citys first big underground tunnel project, with the construction of a subway system coming in the future. see more...
