Although the National Day holiday (September 2) is not such big a business opportunity as Liberation Day or Labour Day for tour operators, they are getting better at catering to holiday-makers over the long September weekend.

Tours to the beach resorts of Nha Trang, Phan Thiet and Phu Quoc are getting more and more popular, as new destinations and facilities are built and the physical infrastructure for getting to these places improves every year. So, the following are some great ideas for short-break holidays in paradise over the long, lazy weekend ahead for those of us trapped in HCMC most of the year.

Tran The Dung, deputy director of Youth Generation Travel Co., said that his company is concentrating on short tours to Dalat or Ninh Thuan. For example, the three-day Dalat City and Ninh Chu Beach (in Ninh Thuan Province) shaves a day off previous tours. Most people only get three-days off work over the holidays so we are catering to the majority, giving them what they want and when they want it at a price they like, he said.

He said his company has already attracted over 700 advanced bookings for the National Day holiday weekend, most of whom are pining for the beach at Ninh Chu, the invigorating chilly nights and rustic beauty of Dalat, or the watery surroundings of Chau Doc & Ha Tien in the Mekong Delta. Tour prices start at around VND630,000 going up to nearly VND1.05 million for twin-room sharing packages about 20% above the normal summer season prices.

Fiditourist is launching several new excursions to help get people up-and-about over the holiday weekend. The first is a VND4.55 to VND4.95 million, five-day trip to Hanoi, Phu Tho, Yen Bai and Sapa up in the far north, visiting the famous Hung temple in Phu Tho and the gorgeous French influenced town of Sapa and its surroundings in Lao Cais beautiful northern highlands. Visitors can also chose to add an extra day and visit the charming vistas around Ha Long Bay for a supplement.

Two of the other tours include an expedition to deepest Danang, Hue, Vinh (Uncle Hos homeland), lasting five-days and costing from VND3.2 to VND3.45 million each, or a jaunt around Vinh, Ha Long and Hanoi for between VND3.95 million to VND4.15 each.

Tour operators are reporting healthy sales though, with Fiditourist saying that they have already received over 2,250 bookings for the holiday period. Similarly, Ben Thanh Tourist are saying that they have been forced to increase prices by around 10% to 12% due to the strong demand. Unsurprisingly, Phan Thiet, Nha Trang, Dalat, Hoi An and Noi are all attracting heavy volumes of late bookings even at prices from between VND610,000 to VND4.89 million per tourist. The company is therefore advising people to contact them immediately or otherwise face disappointment.

Closer to home, Ben Thanh Tourist is also providing a shorter two day excursion to Vinh Long to catch fish or go ostrich riding from only from only VND198,000 to VND291,000 each.

Most tour operators are now refusing or physically incapable of arranging tickets to the fabulously popular Phu Quoc Island or to the coastal city of Nha Trang because they are fully occupied or simply because there are not enough air tickets left. For example, Vietravel only has a few tickets left for Phu Quoc Tours although they still have some for Hanoi and Hue.

However, Lua Viet Picnic Co, also have eight tours to My Tho, Phan Thiet, Dalat, Buon Ma Thuot, Nha Trang, Hanoi still available from between VND279,000 to VND5.3 million each.
